The Ventura County Bucs of the Sunset Baseball League (SBL) lost 12-1 to the Long Beach Legends of the SBL’s premier Best of the West Division at LA Valley College on Saturday.
“We created a hole for ourselves, and when you fall into a hole against a quality opponent it’s really tough to get back out of it.” Bucs associate head coach Evan O’Meara said.
Starting pitcher Justin Hirschberg provided a silver lining for the Bucs. After a rocky first inning, he settled in nicely, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced. Of those, six were retired in three pitches or less.
“Hirschberg’s second, third, and fourth innings were quite good,” O’Meara said. “He struggled on 30 pitches for the first inning, and then he doesn’t throw 30 total over the next three.”
The Legends capitalized after Hirschberg’s exit at the end of the fourth inning, scoring 7 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Ventura County goes on the road to face the Cage Rats Tuesday, June 22nd. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30pm.
