SANTA BARBARA – It was a better showing than the last time the Pirates visited Pershing Park, but they came up short again against the Santa Barbara Foresters, this time by a 6-3 score.
Derek Potts kept it a close game in the first five innings, Allowing just one run and striking out six Foresters, including five batters in a row over the second and third innings, and the Pirates defense helped out by capping a very short fifth inning with a double play.
The Pirates offense was held scoreless until the seventh inning, including two baserunners being thrown out at home plate in the fifth. Jason Ajamian, Ian Mcintyre, and Bradley Chesterton all singled and scored in the seventh, with Chesterton driving home Ajamian's run for the team's only RBI. Chesterton and Kyle Soberano were the only Pirates with two hits on the scoresheet. The Foresters committed three errors in the inning, but stopped the bleeding with another out at home plate to send the game into the seventh inning stretch.
While the three runs weren't enough to best the Foresters, General Manager George Vranau was pleased with the team's improvement over the July 4 game against Santa Barbara. The two teams will meet once more this Thursday at 6pm, and will be broadcast live on KZSB 1290 AM.
