Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Tuesday, July 4th, Cal Lutheran - The Ventura County Pirates clashed with the Canejo Oaks in a highly anticipated game on Independence Day. With an 11-7 record, the Pirates were determined to break their losing streak, but the Oaks proved tough opponents. The Canejo Oaks, representing the California Collegiate League, showcased their strength and secured an 8-5 victory.

Aidan Jbarra stood out for the Pirates, delivering two crucial hits and driving in two runs. Jovan Camacho displayed his speed on the base paths, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Ryan Camacho came in clutch with a triple and contributed a run to the Pirates' effort.

The Pirates' bullpen worked hard but faced challenges. They combined for five strikeouts and seven walks, allowing 12 hits. Catcher-turned-pitcher Brody Brown demonstrated versatility, throwing two innings and recording three strikeouts.

Errors plagued the Pirates, impacting their performance. With four errors on their record, the Pirates faced defensive struggles. They scored five runs on seven hits but struck out six times and walked five times. In contrast, the Canejo Oaks tallied eight hits, scoring 12 runs with only one error.

The Oaks took an early lead by scoring two runs in the second inning. The Pirates fought back, tying the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning after Aidan Jbarra's timely single drove in two runners. In the fifth inning, the Pirates surged ahead with another run. However, defensive miscues allowed the Oaks to respond with three runs in the bottom half, reclaiming the lead at 5-3.

Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh inning, maintaining a close contest with a score of 6-4. The Oaks widened the gap with two more runs in the eighth, extending their lead to 8-4. The Pirates managed to score one more run in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, resulting in an 8-5 loss.

With their fifth consecutive loss, the Pirates now hold an 11-7 record. This defeat serves as a critical point for the team as they strive to regain momentum and bounce back stronger.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the Pirates remain focused on their journey. They aim to turn the tide and reverse their losing streak in their upcoming game against the Arroyo Seco Sentinels. This is on Wednesday, July 5th, at Los Angeles Valley College. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm, and the Pirates are determined to rediscover their winning form.
