Updated: Jul 10, 2023

The Ventura County Pirates clashed with the San Luis Obispo Blues in an intense baseball showdown on Sunday, July 2nd. The game took place in San Luis Obispo, and it was a regular-season matchup between the Pirates and the prestigious California Collegiate League team, the SLO Blues. With an 11-5 record coming into the game, they were hoping to rebound after recent losses. The Pirates were eager to continue their success and get back in the win column.

In a nail-biting contest that extended into extra innings, the final score was 10-11, with the Pirates falling short. The game was packed with action and excitement, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the end.

Pirates players delivered standout performances in their matchup against the SLO Blues. Jovan Camacho once again showcased his versatility on the diamond. He contributed 1 run, 2 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 walks, while stealing a base. Jackson Benattar had a remarkable outing with 1 run, 3 hits, and 2 RBIs. However, the star of the day for the Pirates was Sean Mann, who performed exceptionally. Mann scored 1 run on three hits, tallying 5 RBIs and 2 walks. He was responsible for half of the team's 10 RBIs and demonstrated his power with a home run and a triple. In fact, Mann was only a double shy of hitting for a cycle.

The game was filled with thrilling highlights that kept fans captivated. In the third inning, with two outs and runners on base, Sean Mann blasted a fly ball deep into left field for a two-RBI triple, helping the Pirates take an early lead. The Pirates surrendered six runs in the fourth inning, but mounted a comeback in the fifth, scoring three runs to narrow the gap to 5-6. Sean Mann ignited the rally once again, this time with a two-run home run for his fifth home run of the season. The Pirates refused to back down and fought their way back to tie the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning, fueled by Mann's offensive dominance.

The game remained deadlocked until the 10th inning when the Pirates added three runs to their tally. Jackson Benattar delivered a clutch two-RBI double, and Jesse Gadd chipped in with an RBI single. With a 10-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th, victory seemed within reach for the Pirates. However, their defense faltered, committing an error and issuing a walk in quick succession. The Blues capitalized on the opportunity, scoring runs with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 9-10 with runners in scoring position. Finally, a line drive single from the Blues drove in two more runs, securing the 11-10 victory for the San Luis Obispo Blues.

The game's statistics highlight the contest's competitive nature. The Pirates recorded 10 runs, 11 hits, and 1 error, while the Blues posted 11 runs, 11 hits, and 3 errors. Notably, the Pirates had five players hit by pitches, demonstrating their resilience and willingness to battle on every play.

Despite the disappointing loss, the Pirates maintain a respectable 11-6 record. It marks their fourth consecutive loss, emphasizing the need for regrouping and focusing on their upcoming games.

Looking ahead, the Pirates' next game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 4th, against the Conejo Oaks at Cal Lutheran. The team remains determined to bounce back and reclaim their winning ways as they continue the season.
